depression

"Two prime victims of the disease are your libido and your ability to read. Five times through a paragraph and unable to say what it's about. But oddly, you can read a book or article about depression with full comprehension."
- Dick Cavett, Talk Show, p. 151

ECT

"This is so beautiful. I wish I could be here to enjoy it."
- remarked a deeply depressed Dick Cavett [born 1936] when riding a train through the European countryside. He was given electroshock therapy. "In my case ECT was miraculous. My wife was dubious, but when she came into my room afterward, I sat up and said, 'Look who's back among the living.' It was like a magic wand."
